1903 Leaders & Numbers

Honus Wagner continued his dominance over National League pitchers while ex-Red Sam Crawford came, saw and conquered the American League in his first year with the junior circuit. Ginger Beaumont, baseball’s fastest redhead, thrived along with Wagner. Straitlaced Christy Mathewson and feisty Joe McGinnity—baseball’s relative saint and sinner on the mound—did have one thing in common: Blowing away the competition as companion 30-game winners for the Giants. Not only could Cy Young continue to pitch, he could hit—batting .321 in 137 at-bats. Another Cy—the Reds’ Cy Seymour—returned to the NL as a dangerous hitter after leaving it as a workhorse pitcher in 1900. Taking a year off from inventing devices for catchers, Roger Bresnahan’s numbers spiked at the plate while playing defense in the outfield. Frank Chance’s move from the catching post was more permanent, as he put together his first impressive year at first base. Nap Lajoie was able to fully concentrate on baseball a year after his bitter tug-of-war between the leagues got him sidelined by the courts. Patsy Donovan enjoyed the salad days of his very short—yet popular—tenure at Boston. Rookie 20-game-winner Jake Weimer felt close to home in Chicago; after all, he was only 250 miles from his Iowa hometown.
