1902 Leaders & Numbers

Pittsburgh player-manager Fred Clarke would hold court over a squad full of awesome offensive performances through the year, including another monster effort from Honus Wagner. Boston’s Fred Tenney, after flourishing in the 1890s and then tottering at the turn of the century, enjoyed a comeback campaign at the plate. Ed Delahanty spent his first year in Washington wishing he was playing in New York, and despite that and other personal problems, he dominated the American League. Charley Hickman would enjoy the first and finest of many seasons in which he would play for multiple teams, especially thriving at Cleveland. Lave Cross knocked in 108 runs despite hitting no home runs; no one has ever knocked in more without a round-tripper. The Beaneaters’ prolific one-two pitching punch of Vic Willis and Togie Pittinger combined for 86 starts, 81 complete games and 54 wins; the rest of the Boston pitching staff combined for a 19-30 mark. On the AL side of Beantown, Cy Young once again found the junior circuit easy pickings, winning over 30 games for the second straight year. Red Donahue’s return to St. Louis was far more successful than his previous campaign there, in 1897—when he finished 10-35 with a 6.13 ERA for the NL Browns. And despite the distractions of the Pennsylvania courts, Bill Bernhard’s escape from Philadelphia to Cleveland apparently had no effect on his performance.
